My Illustration Project targets all millennials, people aged from 26-41 years old. According to statistics, these groups of people spend the most time on their phones, averaging 3.7 hours of daily phone screen time. My primary audience are constantly scrolling through social media outlets and take the beautiful surroundings around them for granted. I have noticed that myself and older people around me can be glued to their phones and can have better use of their time. My audience can use some of that time to turn off their devices and enjoy nature.
This image communicates to the audience to make a change to their lifestyle. This picture reveals to the audience to just put the phone down and enjoy the natural landscape, features, and products of Earth. While the phrase “Enjoy Nature, not Technology” is a short phrase, it touches on such a big issue. Nowadays, younger groups of people have a poor habit of constantly checking their phones during leisure time and are so attached to what is occurring behind a screen. I think that with this message, it emphasizes that putting the phone down can really help people be more appreciative of real life and how surreal nature can be.
To create this image, I first started off by creating a standard gradient as the background. I envisioned more of a sunset background, so I played around with the colors to ensure it fits with the setting. Next, I utilized the pen tool to outline the triangle shape for the mountain; I made sure to make small changes in the direction of the vector path to display that realistic mountain feature. Then, I added a color to fill in the mountain by using the Swatches tab. I chose the color dark grey to represent the lack of light being cast on the mountain. I then used the Star tool that was shown during the first Illustrator Tutorial to capture the night sky. I made the color of the stars the same as the sky so the picture looks cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. Lastly, I added the phrase at the top left corner of the image. I placed it there as it fits perfectly as the stars to the right of the phrase and chose this font as it matches the tone of the message. It approaches the audience in a friendly manner.
After completing the second project in this course, I learned that the world is so big and that life is too short to always be on your phone. I think that technology has been a norm in everyday lives so it is just difficult to avoid using any form of devices. But, creating this image has reminded me to take it upon myself to really enjoy the nature around me and echo that message to my friends. I encourage my friend group to put their phones away and to adventure the beach or go on a nice hike. I am a firm believer that the best moments are the ones that involve spontaneous expeditions and spending quality time outside of the technological world. This project opened my perspective on the world and I want others to cherish those same experiences!
On the next project, I want to expand on the topic of being off your phone and just living life to its fullest. To execute this message, I think that having a topic on traveling to different parts of the world would be nice. I can talk about a specific country like Japan, and then go more in depth on a city within that country like Tokyo, and then list activities that you can do to have fun. I want my project to inspire others to try something new and really see how exciting life can be!
